“Stung”

“All great deeds and all great thoughts have a ridiculous beginning. Great works are often born on a street corner or in a restaurant’s revolving door.” -Albert Camus

I have created this blog to serve as an update/journal of sorts to keep track of the things I create, something that I have never done before. Amidst the seemingly slow but constant desire and persistence to create, the need to churn out visually these images, thoughts, and ideas that come into my head has never been stronger. I know it’s coming from the garnered years I’ve supressed it because of past disappointments and disapprovals.

I should know better by now. After dropping off creating what I could call mine for the longest time, and embarking on the most ridiculous, painful and yet sometimes joyful experiences, it’s time. No more excuses of lacking time—-I will make time. It’s hard going home on a long commute and feeling drained by the end of the day from the day job, but I must persist. During my free time at work, in between saving large files for print ads in publications or designing merchandise, I have begun looking online for international open call for submissions, checking out galleries and listing them down on accounts where I would like to show my work. This is a just a centimeter of a kilometer’s worth of dedication. I have acquired a sketchbook I carry around, so I could use the time waiting in between trainrides to draw anything that pops in my head.

After working for several years as a graphics designer (self-taught), I have grown more and more into realization that I don’t like, more often than not, doing an artwork to please other people, or getting something done that other people want. There is such dissatisfaction rising from this that after working for an employer for 9 years, I just want to drop from it and pursue my dream of becoming a full time artist.

I’ve talked to several artists online, some I’ve looked up to, some I’ve had the pleasure of meeting by pure chance. These are several of the wonderful key advices they have given me, I hope they’ll be of help to you too:

  1. One is never too old or young to start something you are passionate about.   You are never too old to start to paint. Just start. All you have is fear.”- G. Baseman
  2. There will be a lot of rejections, but doing what you wish to do will make you rise above it. If you become serious about painting, you need to find galleries all over the world to show. It takes time. And fear.”- G. Baseman
  3. Persistence, hardwork and passion is a key.
  4. It will be a struggle, and some people will be in the way, and they will test you. Only then will you will know the value of your dreams.
  5. Believe in what you do, it is yours to keep. “Keep it up and you will love it always.”-M. Murphy
  6. “Never be drained of hope. First and most important is to have lots of work on hand and paint your ass off! It takes dedication, and determination….and most most importantly….remain consistent in your work. You have great style! Stick with it, and perfect it with each new piece! Don’t give up when you’re just starting! Youve made the consious decision to start…you cant give up before youve even started!” - Lola Gil
  7. Know what you want and don’t be afraid of risks. “If we still haven’t found what we are dying for…then we are not fit to live. Go there over the cliff…jump…Bet your very last cent…”-L. Lorenzana

So if you’re actually one of those people who want to follow the things I’m doing (hey, NO ONE could be reading this, for all I know!), I’ll be posting works in progress and other visual junk I’d be currently doing in here and nowhere else.

So yeah, it’s about time I get some shit started! And if you stumbled upon this—-congratulations? Enjoy going inside the pink mechanical box!
